SAA-C03 vs SAP-C02
Associate Architect or Professional — what's next?

SAA-C03 (AWS Solutions Architect Associate) and SAP-C02 (AWS Solutions Architect Professional) sit at different ends of the same architect track. SAA-C03 is where most AWS careers begin; SAP-C02 is where senior architects prove they can handle enterprise-scale complexity. Here's how they compare — and when to make the jump.

SAA-C03 vs SAP-C02 at a glance

Same architect track, very different scope. SAA-C03 tests well-architected solutions for standard workloads. SAP-C02 tests enterprise-scale architecture with real organizational constraints.

SAA-C03

AWS Solutions Architect Associate

The most widely recognized AWS certification — the standard entry point for architecture roles.

  • Design Secure Architectures (IAM, VPC, security groups)
  • Design Resilient Architectures (Auto Scaling, RDS Multi-AZ)
  • Design High-Performing Architectures (CloudFront, ElastiCache)
  • Design Cost-Optimized Architectures (S3 lifecycle, Reserved pricing)
  • Well-Architected Framework review (capstone)

SAP-C02

AWS Solutions Architect Professional

Enterprise-scale architecture — Organizations, migrations, and cost governance across multiple accounts.

  • Organizational complexity (AWS Organizations, Control Tower, SCPs)
  • Greenfield architecture design at scale
  • Continuous improvement (Cost Optimizer, Trusted Advisor)
  • Migration and modernization (Migration Hub, DMS, 6 Rs)
  • Cost governance across accounts (Budgets, tagging, consolidated billing)

The verdict: SAA-C03 first, SAP-C02 when you're ready to go senior

SAA-C03 is the right starting point for the vast majority of AWS professionals. It's the most widely held AWS certification for good reason — it validates the architectural knowledge needed for the majority of cloud roles and is a prerequisite by experience (if not by rule) for SAP-C02.

SAP-C02 is the right next step when you're working with multi-account AWS environments, dealing with migrations, or targeting senior architect and technical lead positions. It's significantly harder and twice the exam cost — worth it for the right career trajectory, but not a prerequisite for most associate and mid-level roles where SAA-C03 is sufficient.

A good rule of thumb: if you're comfortable with SAA-C03 content and have 1-2 years of hands-on AWS experience beyond it, you're ready to start working toward SAP-C02. If you're still building foundational skills, SAA-C03 plus DVA-C02 or SOA-C03 is often more immediately applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I take SAA-C03 before SAP-C02?

Yes — SAA-C03 (Solutions Architect Associate) is the natural foundation for SAP-C02 (Solutions Architect Professional). AWS recommends at least two years of hands-on AWS experience before SAP-C02, and SAA-C03 provides the baseline knowledge SAP-C02 builds on. Most people take SAA-C03 first.

Is SAP-C02 significantly harder than SAA-C03?

Yes, significantly. SAP-C02 is one of AWS's most difficult certifications — it tests complex, multi-account, multi-region architectures and expects you to understand tradeoffs across dozens of services simultaneously. SAA-C03 tests whether you can design a well-architected solution for a standard workload; SAP-C02 tests whether you can architect at enterprise scale with real constraints around cost, migration, and organizational governance.

What's the core difference between SAA-C03 and SAP-C02?

SAA-C03 (Associate) focuses on designing well-architected solutions for standard workloads in a single account — compute, storage, networking, and databases with clear right answers. SAP-C02 (Professional) focuses on complex, multi-account, multi-region architectures, large-scale migrations, and organizational governance — where the right answer depends on organizational constraints and business context, not just technical best practice.

Do I need SAA-C03 to take SAP-C02?

There is no enforced prerequisite — you can register for SAP-C02 without SAA-C03. However, AWS recommends two years of hands-on experience, and SAP-C02 questions routinely assume knowledge that SAA-C03 teaches. Attempting SAP-C02 without that foundation is possible but considerably harder.

Is SAP-C02 worth it after SAA-C03?

Yes, for the right roles. SAP-C02 is one of the most recognized advanced AWS certifications and opens doors to senior architect and technical lead positions. If you're working with multi-account AWS Organizations, managing migrations, or targeting enterprise architecture roles, SAP-C02 is highly valued. If you're primarily in a single-account environment or operations role, SAA-C03 plus SOA-C03 may be more immediately applicable.

How much do SAA-C03 and SAP-C02 cost compared to HandsOnCert's labs?

SAA-C03 costs $150 and SAP-C02 costs $300 through AWS (no included retake for SAP-C02). HandsOnCert's hands-on lab paths are separate from the exam fee — SAA-C03 is $49 for 5 projects (8 hours), and SAP-C02 is $79 for 5 projects (12 hours), each with Project 1 free.
